Fountain Of Pluto And Proserpine 40 Metres South East Of Waddesdon Manor
Fountain Of Pluto And Proserpine 40 Metres South East Of Waddesdon Manor, Grade II listed fountain at Waddesdon Manor, England.
This marble fountain features a central group of Pluto and Proserpina positioned on an inverted shell, surrounded by tritons riding sea horses. Young tritons holding conches and a sea monster occupy additional places in this detailed composition.
The fountain was created around 1720 by Giuliano Mozani for a ducal palace near Parma in Italy. It was later brought to England and became part of the gardens at Waddesdon Manor.
The fountain portrays the mythological narrative of Pluto abducting Proserpina, which explains the cycle of seasons through ancient Roman beliefs.
The fountain sits southeast of the main house and can be visited during garden opening hours. The walk to this location is part of exploring the broader landscaped grounds.
The central figures are accompanied by infant tritons holding conches, with a sea monster positioned at the center of the composition.
