Lidwell Chapel

Lidwell Chapel is a medieval chapel ruin located near Dawlish in Devon within a small woodland area. The remaining western wall and foundation stones sit close to an ancient holy well that once held spiritual significance.

The chapel dates to the medieval period with documentary records from the 14th century mentioning a monk named Robert de Middlecote. This monk committed a crime at the site and was executed in Exeter in 1329.

The chapel earned Grade II listed status in 1951, marking its importance in England's architectural and religious heritage preservation system.

Visitors reach the chapel ruins via a public footpath that descends from Little Haldon and passes through Chapel Field near Lidwell Farm. The ground can become slippery during wet weather, so appropriate footwear is recommended.

A photographer in the 1970s captured a mysterious image showing the chapel in its complete state as it may have appeared in the 14th century. The photograph remains an intriguing puzzle in the history of this location.
