Statue of George Orwell, Bronze statue near Broadcasting House, London, United Kingdom.
The Statue of George Orwell depicts the author standing upright with a cigarette in casual 1940s attire. It is positioned outside Broadcasting House, the headquarters of the BBC in Westminster.
The sculpture was created by artist Martin Jennings in 2017, following initial rejection by BBC leadership in 2012. New management at the broadcaster eventually approved and installed the memorial.
The wall inscription displays Orwell's words about freedom to express unpopular views from his Animal Farm preface. The monument reminds visitors of the importance of open speech in public discourse.
The statue is located directly at the entrance of Broadcasting House and is easy to find when approaching the BBC building. The location is freely accessible and can be visited at any time.
The artist intentionally included Orwell's signature cigarette despite criticism from some quarters. This detail makes the figure an accurate representation of the historical figure as he was widely known.
