Upton House, Newham, Manor house in West Ham, England
Upton House was a two-story brick building on Upton Lane featuring nine bays and stucco facing. Its interior rooms displayed wood panels from the early 1700s throughout the structure.
The building was constructed in 1731 and gained recognition as the birthplace of Joseph Lister in 1827. He became famous for revolutionizing surgical practice through antiseptic methods.
The house attracted Quaker families in the early 1800s, including the Listers and the Gurneys, who shaped social life in West Ham. These communities left a lasting mark on the area through their values and involvement.
The house stood at the corner of Lancaster Road and Upton Lane until 1968, when it was demolished to make way for a residential complex. Today the site remains part of the local neighborhood as it developed afterward.
A wooden beam from the 15th or 16th century was preserved in the kitchen, showing that the house reused materials from an earlier structure. This discovery revealed layers of construction across several centuries.
