R. A. Stranahan Arboretum, Botanical garden in Toledo, Ohio, United States.
The R. A. Stranahan Arboretum is a botanical garden in Toledo that spreads across 47 acres showcasing about 1,500 tree specimens from multiple continents. The grounds contain both cultivated collections, natural woodlands, several ponds and wetland areas, plus a restored prairie section.
An original forest section remained untouched for over 150 years before the W. W. Knight family donated the grounds to the University of Toledo in 1964. This long period without intervention preserved the natural character of that woodland area.
The place is named after its original benefactor and serves today as a teaching space where students and school groups learn about different tree species and natural systems. Visitors notice signs throughout identifying the various woodland types and habitats, turning the grounds into an outdoor classroom.
The grounds feature extensive walking paths that move through different woodland types, open areas, and water features, allowing good exploration of all habitats. The best time to visit is spring through fall, when trees are clearly visible and the paths are easy to walk.
Ancient sand dunes remain visible beneath the underbrush of the older forest, crowned by the massive oak trees that dominate in this Oak Openings region. These dune formations reveal the geological history of the area in a striking way.
