Fontaines de la porte de Saint-Cloud, Monumental fountains at Place de la Porte-de-Saint-Cloud, Paris, France.
The Fontaines de la Porte de Saint-Cloud are two identical Art Deco fountains in Paris's 16th arrondissement, each rising to 10 meters (33 feet) in height. They feature intricate bas-reliefs showing Parisian monuments and settlements along the Seine river.
These fountains were built between 1934 and 1936 for the 1937 International Exhibition. They stand at the location of former Paris city fortifications and toll barriers.
Sculptor Paul Landowski created bronze medallions on the fountain bases depicting animals and characters from commedia dell'arte theater. These theatrical references show the artistic interests of the period when the fountains were made.
The fountains underwent complete renovation in 2019, receiving new LED lighting systems and updated water mechanisms for efficient resource use. Evening visits offer a special visual experience with the illuminated displays.
The fountains contain 104 water jets reaching heights of up to 13 meters (43 feet), and were Paris's first illuminated fountains when they debuted in 1936. This combination of water display and lighting technology made them innovative for their time.
