Muraille de Chine, Residential building in Saint-Jacques district, Clermont-Ferrand, France

The 320-meter-long concrete residential building stretches across the Saint-Jacques plateau with eight floors containing 354 apartments.

Construction of this public housing complex began in 1961 as part of France's post-war urban development program to address housing shortages.

Local newspaper La Montagne named this structure 'The Great Wall' in 1960, referencing its massive size and horizontal appearance.

The building underwent several renovations, including the installation of 411 square meters of solar panels in 1980 to reduce energy consumption.

The demolition process in 2023 repurposed 25 percent of the building materials for the construction of a new 3.5-hectare urban park.
