Grenfell Tower, Residential tower in North Kensington, England
Grenfell Tower is a residential high-rise in North Kensington that reaches 24 stories and stands 67.3 meters (221 feet) tall. The structure housed 120 flats distributed across the upper floors of the rectangular concrete building.
The tower was completed in 1974 as part of the Lancaster West Estate development. A refurbishment between 2015 and 2016 altered the exterior appearance and building envelope shortly before the devastating fire.
The structure took its name from a 19th-century British Field Marshal who had no direct connection to this neighborhood. After the June 2017 fire, the building became a focal point for mourning and remembrance within the local community.
The site is fully cordoned off and access is strictly restricted. The structure remains under investigation and surrounding streets may have barriers in place.
The original construction used precast concrete blocks with integrated insulation, an unusual method for London social housing at the time. The building was later fitted with cladding that fundamentally changed its outer appearance.
