Lacock Abbey monastery, Augustinian nunnery in Lacock, England
Lacock Abbey is a former Augustinian nunnery in Wiltshire featuring buildings from multiple periods, ranging from medieval cloisters to Elizabethan chimneys. The site includes a Tudor courtyard with stable buildings, brewhouse, and bakehouse that demonstrate how the community managed daily operations.
The monastery was established in 1229 and operated as a religious community until 1539, when King Henry VIII sold it to a nobleman during the Dissolution. This change in ownership protected the buildings from destruction and allowed their transformation into a private residence.
The monastery was home to nuns whose daily routines shaped the rhythm of life in this small community for centuries. Visitors can still sense how the religious community organized their days within these walls, from prayer to work.
The site features both historical rooms and a museum dedicated to photography history with original objects and materials. Plan to spend several hours exploring the various buildings, exhibitions, and grounds, as the property covers a substantial area.
A photographer named Henry Fox Talbot captured one of the world's earliest surviving light-based images here in 1835 by photographing a monastery window. His pioneering work eventually transformed this location into a significant site in the history of the medium.
