Lacock Abbey monastery, Augustinian nunnery in Lacock, England
The stone structure features medieval cloisters, twisted chimney stacks, and mullioned windows, incorporating elements from various architectural periods spanning centuries.
Founded in 1229 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, the monastery operated until 1539 when Henry VIII sold it to Sir William Sharington during the Dissolution.
William Henry Fox Talbot created the earliest surviving photographic negative at this location in 1835, capturing an image of one of the abbey windows.
The monastery houses the Fox Talbot Museum, dedicated to photography history, and maintains original features including the Tudor stable courtyard, brewhouse, and bakehouse.
The rare 13th-century monastic manuscript known as the Brito book remains in its original location within the monastery walls.
