Description
Duchal Castle is a medieval fortress in Kilmacolm positioned where two waterways meet. The surviving walls reach several meters in height and display solid construction techniques from the period.
History
The Lyle family built this fortress in the 13th century as their stronghold. It experienced a major siege by King James IV in 1489 when artillery was deployed against it.
Culture
The layout reflects Scottish defensive design with its organized inner and outer sections and defensive openings. Visitors can observe how the builders created different functional areas to protect inhabitants and control access.
Practical
The northern and eastern wall sections remain visible for examination. Access to the ruins requires care due to the age and condition of the structures.
