Duchal House

Duchal House is a mansion in Kilmacolm with symmetrical facades, large windows, and intricate staircases that show the architectural craftsmanship of the 18th century. The property preserves these classic features to this day and gives a clear sense of the refined building style of that period.

The Porterfield family acquired the estate in 1544, but the present house was built by Alexander Porterfield in 1710, showing design from over a century later. Later, Boyd Porterfield expanded the building eastward, contributing to its current form.

The house displays ornamental details and craftsmanship that reflect the tastes of Scottish landowners of its era. These design choices shaped how rooms appear today and give visitors a sense of how the gentry lived.

The property has had protected status as a Category A listed building since 1971, which means changes need approval. Visitors should check in advance since not all areas may be open to the public.

The estate has formal gardens dating to around 1750 that are recorded in Scotland's garden inventory. These maintained green spaces form a distinct part of the overall site.
