Calderglen Zoo, Animal sanctuary in East Kilbride, Scotland
Calderglen Zoo is a facility housing approximately 50 different animal species set within Calderglen Country Park, southeast of East Kilbride town. The collection includes meerkats, tamarins, coatis, wildcats, and burrowing owls in naturalistic enclosures.
The zoo was established in 1982 and became an integral part of Calderglen Country Park in South Lanarkshire. Over the years, it expanded its educational role to support wildlife conservation efforts in the region.
The zoo serves as a place where visitors come to learn about animals from different regions through observation and interaction. The experience helps people understand the importance of protecting wildlife in their natural habitats.
The zoo is located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of East Kilbride town center and operates daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The grounds are accessible and allow enough time to see the different animal areas during a typical visit.
The northern section of the park holds a Site of Special Scientific Interest designation because of its ecological importance and role in preserving local wildlife. This recognition shows the area is valuable for scientific study as well as animal observation.
