Nellie's Tree, Remarkable beech tree in Parlington, United Kingdom.
Nellie's Tree is a beech with an unusual form in which three separate trunks together create the letter N. The trees stand in Yorkshire woodland and are clearly visible from above along a natural walking route.
A miner named Vic Stead intentionally shaped three young beech saplings into this letter form during the 1920s while traveling to visit his future wife. The patient shaping of these trees over years turned this location into a monument to his affection.
The tree carries the name of a woman from the local mining community, symbolizing a love story that continues to draw couples to the spot. Visitors recognizing the N-shaped formation understand the personal meaning behind this natural monument.
The tree sits on a former railway path now used as a walking and cycling route, making it easy to reach on foot. The ground is relatively flat and accessible for visitors who want to explore the area at a leisurely pace.
The tree was selected as England's Tree of the Year in 2018 by the Woodland Trust, an honor recognizing its form and cultural meaning. This award made it an even more popular destination for visitors traveling throughout the region.
