East Knoyle War Memorial, War memorial in East Knoyle, England
The East Knoyle War Memorial is a Portland limestone monument in this English village. The structure sits on a three-stepped base with a square plinth and a rising shaft topped by a wheel cross.
The memorial was unveiled on September 26, 1920 and originally honored 20 local soldiers who died in World War I. Later, names of those lost in World War II were added, making it a tribute spanning multiple generations of service.
The memorial was designed by sculptor Herbert Maryon from the University of Reading and displays craftsmanship typical of early 20th-century war monuments. Its stonework reflects the careful handwork that characterized these structures of that era.
The memorial is located at the intersection of Church Road, The Street, and Wise Lane at the village center and is easy to reach on foot. It received Grade II listed status in 2016, underscoring its historical importance.
The memorial carries inscriptions for soldiers from three different conflicts, including a Bible verse for one who died by friendly fire in Iraq. This rare form of remembrance shows how the local community honors all its war dead regardless of era or circumstance.
