Church of St Mary in the Baum, Grade I listed Anglican church in Wardleworth, England
The Church of St Mary in the Baum is an Anglican church built with red brick, featuring Alderley stone balustrades and mullioned windows along St Mary's Gate in Rochdale. The interior is divided into distinct spaces, including a Jesus Chapel and a center aisle, separated by original structural pillars.
The building originated as a chapel in 1742 and was completely reconstructed, finished in 1911 under architect Ninian Comper's direction. This rebuilding shows how the place evolved across centuries while retaining a thread of continuity.
The church displays two depictions of Christ Pantocrator and memorial stained glass windows that commemorate local people lost in both World Wars. These artworks tell stories from the community's past and shape how the interior feels when you enter.
The church hosts midday concerts on Wednesdays and arranges guided tours for groups when arranged in advance. The building includes facilities to support visitors with hearing, vision, or mobility needs.
The building preserves original pillars from the 1742 chapel and incorporates them into the 1911 structure. These columns do more than separate the Jesus Chapel from the center aisle; they physically connect the oldest and newest parts of the building.
