Pool Block, Primary School, 35 Church Street, Partick

Pool Block is the former school swimming facility housed in a three-story building constructed from red sandstone located on Church Street in Partick. The structure displays Italianate features including broad eaves and continuous raised rooflights that run along its main facade.

The building was designed in 1904 by architects Donald Bruce and E.A.B. Hay as part of a school facility for the local community. It operated as a swimming facility until 1997 when it closed and has remained unused since then.

The swimming pool was a gathering place where generations of schoolchildren learned to swim and spent time together during their school years. It represented an important part of the school community and reflected how physical education was valued in early 20th-century Scottish schools.

The building is currently not open to the public and can only be viewed from outside. It sits prominently on Church Street, making the red sandstone walls and architectural details easy to observe from the street.

Inside the building is a double-height hall with elaborate timber details including hammerbeams and gothic fretwork that showcase the craftsmanship invested in this educational structure. These decorative elements reveal the care taken in designing spaces beyond the pool itself.
