Ashton Canal Jutland Street Bridge and steepest road in City, Industrial archaeology site and canal bridge in Manchester, England

The Ashton Canal Jutland Street Bridge is a canal crossing on Jutland Street, a steep cobbled road near Piccadilly Station in Manchester. The street climbs at a very sharp angle, with a slope of around 33 percent, making it the steepest road in the city.

Before 1939, the street was called Junction Street before taking its current name. The Ashton Canal beneath the bridge dates from the industrial era, when it was a main route for moving goods through the region.

Jutland Street is easy to reach on foot from Piccadilly Station, just a short walk away. The cobbled surface can become slippery when wet, so take care especially when heading downhill.

In 1929, the artist L.S. Lowry painted Jutland Street, and the work became the first of his paintings bought by Manchester City Art Gallery. During the 2020 lockdown, the slope turned into an outdoor training spot for runners and boxing club members looking for a workout while gyms were closed.
