National Cycle Collection

The National Cycle Collection displays around 260 bicycles spanning different eras and construction methods in a Grade II listed building. The range extends from an 1818 hobby horse through Victorian machines to modern carbon fiber racing bikes.

The museum came together in 1997 when three separate collections merged and were housed in the Automobile Palace by the Welsh Tourist Board. The building itself dates from 1911 and was enlarged in 1919 while keeping its original design intact.

The collection shows how the bicycle evolved from a luxury item into everyday transport for ordinary people. You can see how different bike styles reflected the needs and interests of cyclists across different periods.

The museum sits in central Llandrindod Wells and is easily reached on foot from the town center. Visitors should check opening times in advance since hours change between seasons.

The building features an early grid-pattern steel frame structure used in 1911, which was innovative for its time and demonstrated modern construction methods. Such steel frames became the foundation for much 20th-century architecture.
