Tranmer House, Country house at Sutton Hoo, England

Tranmer House is a Tudor Revival style building perched on a hill overlooking the River Deben and the town of Woodbridge in Suffolk. The house connects to the Sutton Hoo Visitor Centre and contains restored rooms along with archaeological displays.

The building gained prominence when its owner Edith Pretty commissioned excavations of nearby burial mounds, resulting in significant Anglo-Saxon discoveries in 1939. These findings established the site as one of England's most important locations for understanding Anglo-Saxon culture.

The house shows visitors how an upper-class household functioned in the 1930s, with rooms arranged as they were during that era. The display focuses on the daily life and interests of Edith Pretty, revealing the world of a woman who had the means and curiosity to pursue archaeology.

Visitors can explore the restored interior rooms and archaeological exhibits throughout the year, with the adjoining visitor centre providing additional information and context. The hilltop location is easy to navigate on foot, and the elevation offers views across the surrounding countryside.

A second Anglo-Saxon cemetery lies hidden beneath the rose garden of the property, uncovered during excavations in the 2000s. This concealed burial ground reveals that the site served as a place of the dead across multiple centuries.
