King George VI Memorial Chapel, Sepulchral chapel at St George's Chapel in Windsor, England
King George VI Memorial Chapel is a memorial chamber in Perpendicular Gothic style within St George's Chapel in Windsor. The small stone chamber displays red and blue stained glass windows that cast coloured light across the interior.
Queen Elizabeth II commissioned the chapel in 1962 as a burial place for her father, and construction was completed in 1969. This marked the first architectural addition to St George's Chapel since the 15th century.
The iron gates carry words from the poem 'The Gate of the Year' by Minnie Louise Haskins, which King George VI quoted in his 1939 Christmas message. Visitors can read these poetic lines that once offered comfort to the nation during the early months of the Second World War.
The chapel is part of St George's Chapel, so opening times and entry rules follow those of the main church. The space is small, and visitors should speak quietly as it holds the remains of several members of the royal family.
King George VI was initially buried elsewhere before his remains were moved here. Later, his daughter Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip were also laid to rest in this space.
