Dog Stone, Stone memorial at Coity Mountain, Wales
The Dog Stone is a Grade II listed structure on the slopes of Coity Mountain in Wales, dedicated to Carlo, a red setter. The memorial occupies a prominent position and offers far-reaching views across the South Wales Valleys and surrounding hills.
The memorial was built in 1864 to mark a tragic hunting accident in which Carlo was accidentally shot by his owner. This structure documents a significant moment in Victorian attitudes toward animals and later received Grade II listed status.
The memorial shows how Victorians honored their pets through permanent structures, reflecting the growing emotional bond between people and their dogs. The inscriptions in English and Welsh speak to the local meaning this remembrance holds for both communities.
The memorial is reachable via marked footpaths across Coity Mountain, starting from several points in the surrounding area. The walk up is manageable on foot, though terrain is hilly and uneven, and the site can feel exposed during windier weather.
The memorial marks the highest point of two administrative regions simultaneously, a rare geographic feature in the area. Additionally, it bears inscriptions in both English and Welsh, reflecting its dual local significance.
