Custard Apple , Breadfruit and Soursop, Public sculpture in Hackney, England
Three bronze and marble sculptures near St Augustine's Tower depict Caribbean fruits: custard apple, breadfruit, and soursop in large-scale forms.
The artwork inaugurated in October 2021 stands as the first permanent public monument celebrating Caribbean workers who arrived in Britain between 1948 and 1971.
Artist Veronica Ryan selected these specific Caribbean fruits to represent the local market heritage and food traditions of immigrant communities in East London.
Located at Narrow Way, the sculptures measure three meters across and include surfaces where visitors can sit while observing the detailed forms.
Each fruit sculpture combines marble and bronze materials to capture the textures and shapes of Caribbean produce found at nearby Ridley Road Market.
