Ravenscar House Museum, Art museum in Christchurch City, New Zealand.
Ravenscar House Museum is an art museum in Christchurch housing paintings, sculptures, designer furniture, and antiquities displayed within a modern building featuring reflecting pools and vaulted ceilings. The galleries are arranged to present each category of artwork with appropriate spatial context.
The museum was created after the 2011 earthquake destroyed the private residence of founders Jim and Susan Wakefield. They used insurance proceeds to build this space to make their art collection available to the public.
The collection displays works by New Zealand artists such as Frances Hodgkins and Ralph Hotere arranged in home-like rooms. This setting creates an intimate experience where visitors encounter the artworks as they might in a private residence rather than a conventional gallery.
The museum offers guided tours led by knowledgeable staff who provide detailed information about the artworks and their significance. Visitors should allow time to move through the different galleries at their own pace and fully appreciate the collection.
The building was designed by Patterson Associates with high gables that echo the architectural style of the nearby Christchurch Arts Centre and Canterbury Museum. This design choice visually connects the space to other cultural institutions in the city.
