Twelve Local Heroes, Bronze busts collection at Worcester Boulevard, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Twelve Local Heroes is a collection of twelve bronze busts located on the University of Canterbury campus. The sculptures display detailed portraits of notable Christchurch residents arranged along a publicly accessible pathway.
Artist Mark Whyte created this collection in 2009 following four years of development by the Twelve Local Heroes Foundation. The works were relocated to the university campus in 2023 to support the institution's anniversary celebrations.
The sculptures honor people who shaped Christchurch through sports, environmental protection, and writing. When you walk past them, you see names that reflect different ways locals contributed to their community.
The busts are freely accessible on campus and best explored on foot at your own pace. Plan time for a slow walk to examine the portraits and read the information plaques beside each sculpture.
The collection includes people at different stages of life - some had already passed away, others agreed but died later, and some were living when selected. This mix creates an unusual memorial that honors multiple generations and life paths at once.
