Yenikapı Mevlevihanesi, Sufi lodge in Zeytinburnu, Turkey
Yenikapı Mevlevihanesi is a large complex in Zeytinburnu with prayer halls, living quarters, and dedicated spaces for Sufi whirling ceremonies. The buildings still show the layout of a traditional Sufi lodge with distinct areas for different activities and gatherings.
Founded in 1597 by Malkoç Mehmet Efendi, it became the second major Mevlevi center in Istanbul after the Galata lodge. The site maintained its spiritual importance for centuries while adapting to the city's changing needs.
The lodge produced notable Turkish classical musicians, including composer Ismail Dede Efendi and poet Şeyh Galip, who created their works within its walls.
The site now serves as an academic institute of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University, hosting graduate programs and traditional ceremonies. It is advisable to check in advance whether visits are open to the public and when special events are scheduled.
During the Balkan Wars and the Gallipoli Campaign, the complex was converted into a military hospital where wounded Turkish soldiers received care. This transformation demonstrates how the site adapted its purpose to serve community needs during times of crisis.
