College Hall, Academic building in Philadelphia, United States
College Hall is a four-story building at the University of Pennsylvania with an exterior of brown and yellow sandstone, mica schist, serpentine, and granite combined in distinctive patterns. The structure houses the Department of History, Undergraduate Admissions Office, and School of Arts and Sciences across its interior spaces.
The building was completed in 1930 as the first structure on the University's West Philadelphia campus. It marked the beginning of the campus expansion and originally served as libraries, classrooms, laboratories, and administrative offices.
Three distinct pavilions within College Hall represent different academic functions: arts, sciences, and central administration, reflecting the institutional organization of education.
The building is accessible during business hours and serves as a helpful landmark for navigating the campus. Different departments are clearly marked and easy to locate inside.
The building combines Collegiate Gothic elements with Second Empire style features in an unusual mix of stone types. This combination creates a visually interesting pattern that sets it apart from typical campus architecture.
