McChord Air Museum, Aviation museum at McChord Field, Washington, US.
The McChord Air Museum is an aviation museum on McChord Field, an active military airfield in Washington State. It is made up of an indoor gallery, an outdoor area called Heritage Hill Airpark with views of the runway, and a workshop where aircraft are restored.
The McChord Air Museum Foundation began planning the museum in 1982, and it opened to the public in July 1984. Since then the collection has grown steadily, and the museum has become a place for preserving military aviation history in the Pacific Northwest.
The museum holds military aircraft and aviation paintings that visitors can walk around and examine up close. A flight simulator on the floor gives a hands-on sense of what it feels like to operate a plane.
Entering the base requires a valid photo ID, but a standard Washington State driver's license is not accepted at the gate. It is worth checking in advance which documents are allowed so you are prepared when you arrive.
A C-124 Globemaster II on display in Heritage Hill Airpark was flown directly to the museum in 1986 for permanent display. It was one of the largest transport aircraft of its era, and seeing one up close at a museum is quite rare.
