The organization started in 1948 as the 25th Air Division in Silver Lake, Washington, before transforming into the Western Air Defense Sector in 1995.

The sector maintains constant surveillance of air traffic from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean through advanced Battle Control Systems.
After transitioning from the Q-93 radar system in 2005, WADS implemented modern command technology to process data from multiple surveillance networks.
