Sommet du Couar, Mountain viewpoint at 1988 meters in Préalpes de Digne, France.
Sommet du Couar is a summit in the Préalpes de Digne at approximately 2000 meters elevation, accessible through a challenging hiking route starting from Archail village. The ascent passes through rocky terrain with numerous switchbacks toward Pas d'Archail, offering views across the surrounding mountain landscape.
The area became established as a hiking destination during the 20th century and was integrated into the regional network of maintained trails. The route remains part of the local hiking infrastructure and continues to attract mountain walkers today.
A metal box placed at the base of the summit cross allows hikers to leave messages, establishing a local tradition of shared experiences.
Visitors should know that the route is steep and demands good fitness, with significant elevation gain spread over several hours. Sturdy footwear and weather protection are necessary, as mountain conditions can change quickly.
The area hosts one of the largest populations of the meadow viper, a small venomous snake that has adapted well to mountain conditions. Hikers may occasionally spot these creatures but should maintain respectful distance.
