Båstnäs Car Cemetery, Vintage car cemetery in Årjäng Municipality, Sweden.
Båstnäs Car Cemetery is a collection of abandoned automobiles from the 1940s to 1960s scattered throughout a forested area in Årjäng Municipality. Hundreds of vehicles from manufacturers such as Saab, Volvo, Ford, and Opel sit side by side as trees and vegetation grow between and around the metal structures.
Two brothers established this collection in the 1950s, initially gathering vehicles at this remote location in the Swedish woods. Over the decades, the site grew as more cars accumulated, with nature gradually reclaiming the machines left behind.
The location draws photographers and artists who document the progression of nature reclaiming the mechanical remnants of the twentieth century.
The site sits on private property and is reached by driving along forest tracks that become progressively rougher. Wear sturdy footwear and prepare for uneven ground as you walk among and around the weathered vehicles.
Many vehicles have trees growing directly through their engine compartments and windows, creating a surreal fusion of nature and machinery. These images have drawn photographers and artists who document how the forest slowly reclaims the metal structures over time.
