Fossil Rock, Mountain formation in Mleiha Desert, United Arab Emirates
The limestone formation rises from orange sand dunes, containing numerous marine fossils embedded within its rocky surface and crevices spanning the entire structure.
The formation dates back to the Cretaceous period when the area was submerged under water, preserving countless gastropod specimens in its sedimentary layers.
The Mleiha Archaeological Centre near Fossil Rock displays artifacts from pre-Islamic settlements and educates visitors about desert life through guided expeditions.
Visitors can reach Fossil Rock through a 45-minute drive from Dubai via Emirates Road, with hiking trails covering 8 kilometers and 265 meters elevation gain.
The rock formation stands as a natural geological museum, revealing marine life that existed millions of years ago in what is now an arid desert environment.
