Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette de Corps

The sanctuary Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette is a Catholic pilgrimage center located at 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) elevation in the French Alps. It comprises a basilica, a chapel of encounter, bronze statues depicting scenes of Marian apparition, and a cemetery featuring a Virgin statue.

The sanctuary originated from a Marian apparition reported by two shepherd children, Maximin Giraud and Melanie Calvat, on September 19, 1846. This event led to ecclesiastical recognition and the establishment of the site as a major pilgrimage destination.

The sanctuary draws pilgrims who come to pray and access the spring water, which many believe holds healing properties. It remains a gathering place for religious observances and personal devotion.

The site is accessible by car or bus via a road completed in 1968, situated in the high alpine environment. Visitors should prepare for cool mountain weather and potentially challenging terrain depending on the season.

The Marian apparition was communicated to the shepherd children in two languages—French and the local dialect—to ensure they understood the message. This detail reveals how the event was adapted to the children's background and language abilities.
