Tour de l'Horloge, Historical clock tower in Guînes
The Tour de l'Horloge is a stone tower in Guînes that rises above the old market square. The structure shows a rectangular floor plan with a pointed roof and bells that still ring today.
The tower was built in the 13th century as part of the town fortifications and first served as a watchtower. In the 16th century it received its astronomical clock that displayed lunar and solar phases.
The name comes from the clock that has marked the rhythm of daily life in the town for centuries. People used to gather here to hear public announcements and check the time together.
Visitors can climb the tower during opening hours to enjoy a panoramic view over the rooftops and surrounding plain. A narrow staircase leads upward, so steady footing and reasonable mobility are helpful.
The astronomical mechanism originally showed not just the hours but also the movement of celestial bodies for farmers and merchants. Today part of the old gearwork is still visible inside the tower if you look closely.
