Edgar Allan Poe's Grave, Literary figure burial site at Westminster Hall, Baltimore, United States.
Edgar Allan Poe's grave sits in Westminster Hall's burial ground in Baltimore, marked by a granite monument carved with his profile. The marker stands near the entrance and serves as a straightforward memorial to the American author.
After Poe died in 1849, his grave bore only a simple sandstone marker numbered 80 left by local students. In 1875, supporters funded the granite monument that stands there today to give his memory a proper place.
The site draws readers and writers who leave flowers and handwritten notes at the stone marker throughout the year. These personal offerings show how deeply Poe's work touches people and what place he holds in literary history.
The burial ground is open daily and allows visitors to pay respects at the graveside freely without reservations needed. Directional signs and staff members help guests locate the spot without difficulty.
For six decades, a mysterious visitor known only as the Poe Toaster left three roses and cognac at the grave on January 19 each year. The identity of this visitor and the meaning behind this decades-long ritual remain unknown to this day.
