Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, Volcanic formation on Jeju Island, South Korea.
The Geomunoreum Lava Tube System is a volcanic network on Jeju Island comprising multiple interconnected tunnels stretching from the volcano summit to the coastline. The eight accessible tubes such as Mangjanggul and Bengdwigul display different features and show various stages of lava flow formation.
The system formed approximately 100,000 to 300,000 years ago through multiple eruptions of the Geomunoreum volcano that directed basaltic lava toward the sea. These volcanic events shaped the complex tunnel network visible today.
The natural formations within the tubes hold scientific importance for understanding volcanic processes and contribute to regional geological research initiatives.
The tubes are accessible via marked pathways equipped with informational signs, and guided tours are available. Wear comfortable shoes and stick to designated routes, as underground conditions can be cold and slippery.
Some tubes such as Dangcheomuldonggul preserve rare mineral deposits and lava structures that have remained unchanged since their formation. These stable geological features make them research sites for volcanologists.
