Caponnière, Military bunker in Place des Halles, Strasbourg, France
The cylindrical concrete structure spans 490 square meters beneath the city center, featuring multiple chambers designed for defense purposes.
Built in 1937 under architect Paul Dopff's direction, the bunker served as a medical facility during wartime and later became a German military installation.
The structure contains German inscriptions from the 1940-1944 occupation period, reflecting the changing military control of Strasbourg during World War II.
Access to the bunker requires special authorization due to the presence of hazardous materials including asbestos and lead within the structure.
The facility now operates as an underground organic mushroom farm, employing visually impaired workers who produce twenty kilograms of mushrooms weekly.
