Casa Adela
Casa Adela is a small Caribbean restaurant in New York County that has operated since 1976. The space is simply furnished with a few tables, and it serves dishes such as roasted chicken, pork, rice and beans, plantains, and flan, all prepared slowly with traditional ingredients.
Adela Fargas founded the restaurant to prepare dishes that reminded her of her Puerto Rican home. Today her son Luis and his family continue the business, preserving the original tradition and the same simple, flavorful recipes from the founding period.
The restaurant is named after its founder Adela and displays her photographs on the walls, reflecting the personal story of the place. The Puerto Rican flag and palm leaf decorations at the entrance create a direct connection to the Caribbean home that visitors and regulars experience each time they arrive.
The restaurant is especially busy during evening hours, but much less crowded in the afternoon, making it ideal for a more relaxed visit. Since cash is preferred and no alcohol is served, it is best to bring money and bring your own beverages if you wish.
The restaurant has barely changed since its founding and continues to be run by the founder's family in the same way, making it a rarely altered place in the city. This continuity over decades gives many visitors the feeling of stepping into a piece of the past.
