124 Ridge Street Gallery, Art gallery in Lower East Side, Manhattan, US.
124 Ridge Street Gallery was an art space in Manhattan's Lower East Side that presented contemporary art exhibitions and independent film screenings in a small venue with about 30 seats. Located at the corner of Ridge Street and Stanton Street, it featured rotating exhibitions of different contemporary artworks.
The gallery was founded in 1985 by nine artists including Susan Bachemin and Elizabeth Evers as a collective venture. It closed in 1997 after operating for roughly a decade.
The space played a role in the East Village art scene by showing work from local artists and hosting the independent Film Crash cinema series. Visitors could witness the experimental direction that shaped the local creative community at that time.
The space was located at a central corner of the Lower East Side, making it easily accessible by subway. Those interested in exploring the area's 1980s art history can walk around the neighborhood today and discover other artistic spots nearby.
A notable exhibition was Matty Jankowski's 1987 show 'The Joke is in the Mail', which explored experimental art forms through mail-based works. This exhibition showed how inventive the space was in exploring unconventional artistic approaches.
