Mercury Lounge, Music venue in Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City, United States.
Mercury Lounge is a music venue on the Lower East Side with capacity for around 250 people and professional audio equipment throughout the space. The building features a straightforward interior design focused on the stage, keeping the attention on performers rather than decor.
In the 19th century, the building housed staff for a wealthy household and connected through underground tunnels to the main residence. It later operated as a restaurant and antique shop before transforming into a music venue in 1993.
The name draws from Roman mythology and creates a gathering place where music fans witness emerging artists up close in a compact setting. This layout encourages direct connection between performers and the audience watching from just a few feet away.
The venue sits within walking distance of major transit points and is surrounded by restaurants and bars throughout the neighborhood. Expect crowded conditions and loud noise, especially during performances by well-known artists.
A former staff member discovered a young band performing at the venue and left his job to become their full-time manager. That decision helped turn them into one of the most influential acts of the 2000s.
