Village View, Residential complex in East Village, Manhattan, US
Village View is a residential complex in East Village composed of seven buildings stretching between First Avenue and Avenue A. It combines three tall towers and four shorter buildings that house roughly 1,200 residential units in total.
Construction began in 1964 as part of the Mitchell-Lama cooperative housing program sponsored by New York City Housing Authority. Six major educational institutions partnered to fund and support this residential development for their students and staff.
The complex attracts students and academics who value proximity to their sponsoring institutions and the East Village's cultural scene. Residents enjoy easy access to the neighborhood's galleries, music venues, and independent shops that define the area's creative character.
The development occupies the area between Second Street and Sixth Street with entrances accessible from First Avenue and Avenue A. Public transportation is well connected to this location, and the neighborhood offers convenient access to shops and services nearby.
Cooper Union and the New School for Social Research were among the six institutions that co-founded this housing complex as a pioneering collaborative effort. This partnership was remarkable for combining resources from competing institutions to address housing needs in the city.
