FRIGID New York

FRIGID New York is an independent theater company in East Village that operates under the St Marks Theater, presenting monthly shows and main stage productions. The organization runs eight theater festivals throughout the year along with artist residencies and other programming.

The company was founded in 1998 and spent 25 years at the Kraine Theater before moving to UNDER St Marks in 2023. This shift allowed the ensemble to continue its independent work in a space that had already hosted experimental performances.

The Fire This Time Festival presents works by emerging playwrights of African and African American descent who explore current theatrical directions. The stage gives them space to share their voices and perspectives on what matters in contemporary society.

The venue is located on St Marks Place between First Avenue and Avenue A, making it easy to find on foot. All box office money from festival performances goes directly to the artists who perform there.

The space under St Marks has hosted experimental performances since the 1970s, making it a place rooted in the city's downtown theater history. Many independent performers and creators have passed through its basement over the decades.
