Bouwerie Lane Theatre, Renaissance Revival theater in NoHo district, Manhattan, US
Bouwerie Lane Theatre is a building at 330 Bowery with an ornate cast iron facade in French Second Empire style, completed in 1874. The structure features elaborate detailing that reflects its original purpose as a banking institution.
The building was originally constructed in 1874 as Bond Street Bank and was acquired by German Exchange Bank in 1879. Its conversion to a theater occurred in 1963, giving the structure a new purpose.
From 1974 to 2006, the Jean Cocteau Repertory used this space to present classical and contemporary plays to New York audiences.
The building now houses residential units with retail spaces on the ground floor at the corner of Bowery and Bond Street. Visitors should note that interior access is not always available to the public.
The original bank vault from the building's financial days remains in the basement as a reminder of its past. The former teller window was repurposed as the ticket booth during its theater years.
