The Living Room, Music venue in Lower East Side, Manhattan, US
The Living Room was a music venue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where four to five singer-songwriters performed each night. A second performance space called Googies Lounge operated upstairs, offering additional shows on the same evening.
The venue was founded in 1988 by Steve Rosenthal and Jennifer Gilson inside a former fried chicken restaurant in Lower East Side. In 2003 it moved to a larger space on Ludlow Street as the programming grew in scope.
The Living Room was known for hosting singer-songwriters in a setting where the audience sat just a few feet from the performers. This closeness gave evenings a near-private feel that was rarely found in larger venues around the city.
Entry to the main room worked on a one-drink minimum, and visitors were encouraged to leave a suggested donation for the artists. Arriving early was the best way to get a seat with a clear view of the stage before the room filled up.
In 2002, a live album called "The Living Room - Live in NYC - Vol.1" was released featuring recordings made directly from the stage. This record stands as one of the few lasting documents of the nightly programming that took place there.
