Sea Shanty Cafe, Seaside restaurant in Bae Trearddur, United Kingdom
Sea Shanty Cafe is a restaurant by the sea in Bae Trearddur, a small bay on the Welsh island of Anglesey. It has both indoor and outdoor seating areas facing the water, along with a decor that draws on seafaring themes.
A first restaurant at this spot ran for several decades before closing in 2002. The Sea Shanty Cafe reopened in July 2016 in larger premises, picking up a dining tradition that the bay had known for a long time.
The name refers to the working songs sailors sang on long voyages, a tradition closely tied to the seafaring communities along this stretch of Welsh coast. The interior decor reflects this connection, with objects and details that hint at the local maritime past.
Outdoor seating faces the sea, but the coast here can be windy, so a light layer is worth bringing whatever the season. The cafe is close to the beach, making it easy to combine a meal with a walk along the bay.
Inside the cafe stands a restored Nickelodeon machine alongside an Edwardian-style ice cream parlor, both kept as decorative pieces within the dining area. These two objects come from a very different era than the seafaring decor around them, which makes them stand out all the more.
