Torre d'en Galmés

Torre d'en Galmés, Archaeological site near Son Bou, Menorca, Spain

Description

Torre d'en Galmés is an archaeological complex spread across a hilltop in Alaior, featuring three stone watchtowers and numerous circular residential structures with central courtyards. The settlement layout reveals how inhabitants organized their living spaces across different areas of the site.

History

The settlement emerged during the Talayotic period around 1400 BCE and continued to be inhabited through the Roman era and into the period when Muslim refugees occupied it during the Reconquista. This extended occupation reveals how the location remained strategically important across multiple cultures.

Culture

The site features T-shaped stone monuments called taulas positioned within horseshoe-shaped enclosures, offering insight into the ritual practices of ancient Menorcan communities. These structures suggest how religious gatherings and ceremonies took place on the hilltop.

Practical

The site is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and you will need comfortable shoes to explore the uneven terrain across the hilltop. Bring water and sun protection, as there is minimal shade on the exposed grounds.

Did you know?

The complex features an advanced water collection system with underground cisterns connected by channels, demonstrating how ancient residents managed water storage in an arid environment. This engineering solution reveals the technical knowledge required for survival on the hilltop.
