Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, Heritage railway museum in Powys, Wales.
The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is a narrow-gauge railway running about 8 miles through the Welsh countryside between two towns and crossing hilly terrain and valleys. The operation includes several stations and stops with a collection of historic steam locomotives used for passenger journeys.
The railway opened in 1903 under Cambrian Railways management to support local commerce and passenger movement, then closed in 1956 as traffic declined. It was relaunched in 1963 as a heritage operation run by volunteers and has operated continuously since then.
The locomotive collection features steam engines from various European countries, including original engines like The Earl and Countess from 1902. Visitors can see how these machines represent the craftsmanship and industrial heritage that shaped the region.
Train journeys depart from two main stations: Welshpool Raven Square or Llanfair Caereinion, with regular services available throughout the year. Visitors should wear good footwear and check current schedules ahead of arrival, as operating days vary by season.
A section called Golfa Bank features an exceptionally steep gradient that demands specialized locomotives with high traction power to handle this challenging stretch. This technical hurdle is why certain machines in the collection are specifically used on this route.
