Montjuïc National Palace, Art museum in Sants-Montjuïc, Spain.
The palace on Montjuïc Hill houses paintings and sculptures from medieval times to the modern era. Inside, visitors find grand halls with high ceilings and multiple floors filled with art historical collections.
Builders constructed the palace in 1929 as the centerpiece of an International Exposition. After this major event, the building transformed into an art hall and later received its current name as a national museum.
The building shapes the face of Montjuïc and reflects Catalonia's artistic ambition. Here you see artworks from different periods that show how Catalans and Spaniards have told their history through art.
Visitors can walk up the hill on foot or take the funicular railway to reach the top. Plan at least two to three hours to explore the collections at a relaxed pace.
The Romanesque wall paintings here come from small churches in the Pyrenees and were brought together at this site in the 20th century. This collection shows religious artworks that otherwise would have nearly disappeared.
