Jardín Botánico Histórico de Barcelona, Botanical garden in Montjuïc, Spain.
The Historic Botanical Garden of Barcelona stretches across approximately 14 hectares on Montjuïc and contains around 1,300 plant species from Mediterranean regions. The plantings are organized into themed sections that represent different climate zones.
The garden was founded in 1930 by botanist Pius Font i Quer as a place to study and conserve Mediterranean flora. Out of these scientific origins, it later became a place where visitors could experience this plant diversity.
The garden displays plants from five climate zones around the world that share conditions similar to the Mediterranean region. Walking through the different sections, visitors can see how plants from distant continents develop similar features despite being separated by thousands of kilometers.
The garden is reachable by the Montjuïc Cable Car or nearby metro stations and features wheelchair-accessible pathways. The hilly terrain means comfortable shoes and plenty of water are advisable for longer visits.
The site contains a specialized bee house where visitors can observe bee colonies and learn about their role in Mediterranean ecosystems. This installation demonstrates how closely pollinators and plants depend on each other.
