The 177-meter-high mountain stands between Plaza España and the commercial port, providing panoramic views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea.
A fortress was built here during the mid-1600s amid regional conflict and evolved into a military structure that controlled the city for centuries. The hill later transformed into a cultural and sporting center when it hosted two major international events in the 20th century.
The National Museum of Catalan Art, located in the Palau Nacional building, contains an extensive collection of Romanesque and Gothic art from the region.
Access is through a funicular railway from Parallel metro station or by cable car from the harbor area. Walking routes lead up from different neighborhoods and pass through gardens and parks along the way.
The site contains several old cemeteries on its slopes with graves of local figures set among cypress trees and Mediterranean plants. The grounds also hold botanical collections featuring plants from different climate zones around the world.
