Jardí Botànic de Barcelona, Botanical garden in Montjuïc Park, Spain.
Jardí Botànic de Barcelona is a garden situated on the Montjuïc slopes featuring about 1,300 plant species from Mediterranean climate regions worldwide. The space is organized into distinct sections where vegetation from different parts of the world grows on terraced ground.
The garden was founded in 1999 following designs by architects Carlos Ferrater and Bet Figueras on the Montjuïc hillside. The project reflected a desire to gather and display Mediterranean plants from around the world.
The garden shows how Mediterranean plants appear in gardens and landscapes across different cultures and how communities in similar climates use the same species. Visitors encounter vegetation that connects the daily lives of people living around the Mediterranean and in comparable regions worldwide.
The garden is accessible by cable car or public transport and sits on a hillside, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring the area. Visitors should allow time to navigate the different levels since the location requires moving around on foot.
The garden spans five distinct zones recreating Mediterranean climate regions from Australia, California, Chile, South Africa, and the Mediterranean Basin. Each zone sits at a different elevation on the hillside and shows how similar climates around the globe have developed comparable plant life.
